How it works
The toxic agent in chocolate is theobromine, a methylxanthine that dogs metabolize very slowly compared to humans. Different chocolates contain very different amounts of theobromine per gram — that's why a Lab eating a Hershey's bar is usually fine, but the same Lab eating a square of baker's chocolate may be a medical emergency.
The calculator does two things:
- Multiplies the amount eaten (in grams) by the theobromine concentration of that chocolate type (mg/g).
- Divides the total theobromine load by your dog's body weight in kilograms.
The result — mg of theobromine per kg of body weight — drops into one of four zones based on published veterinary toxicology references:
- < 20 mg/kg — likely safe, monitor for GI upset.
- 20–40 mg/kg — mild signs likely. Call your vet.
- 40–60 mg/kg — moderate toxicity. Call your vet now.
- > 60 mg/kg — severe / potentially lethal. Emergency vet immediately.

How much chocolate is toxic to dogs? +
Toxicity depends on theobromine dose per kilogram of body weight. Mild symptoms can appear above 20 mg/kg, moderate signs above 40 mg/kg, and severe — potentially lethal — toxicity above 60 mg/kg. Dark and baker's chocolate are far more dangerous than milk chocolate because they contain much more theobromine per gram.
What are the signs of chocolate poisoning in dogs? +
Early signs include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst, restlessness, and panting. As the dose rises you may see tremors, racing heart, hyperthermia, and seizures. Symptoms usually appear within 6–12 hours of ingestion.
Is white chocolate safe for dogs? +
White chocolate contains negligible theobromine (about 0.1 mg/g), so theobromine toxicity is extremely unlikely. However, the high fat and sugar content can still cause pancreatitis, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is best avoided.
What should I do if my dog ate chocolate? +

Theobromine is absorbed slowly. Symptoms typically appear between 6 and 12 hours after ingestion and can last 24–72 hours because dogs metabolize theobromine very slowly compared to humans.
Can a small dog die from one chocolate chip? +
Almost never from a single standard chocolate chip — but a small dog eating a handful of dark chocolate chips, or a square of baker's chocolate, can absolutely reach a dangerous dose. Always run the numbers and call your vet if you are unsure.
