Divide the bag weight by the daily portion to get how many days the bag lasts, then divide the bag price by that number. Example: a 12 kg bag at 60 currency units, fed at 300 g/day, lasts 40 days and costs 1.50 per day.

Often less than the shelf price suggests. Premium foods are usually more calorie- and nutrient-dense, so the recommended daily portion is smaller — you feed fewer grams per day. A bag that costs 30% more but is fed at a 25% smaller portion is only slightly more expensive per day, and sometimes cheaper.

Use the feeding table printed on the bag for your dog's weight, or better, calculate it from your dog's calorie needs and the food's kcal/kg listed on the label. Feeding tables are a starting point — adjust to keep body condition ideal.

Because dogs don't eat kilograms of shelf weight — they eat calories. A cheap food with low energy density needs a much larger daily portion, so its low price per kg is offset by feeding more of it. Cost per day, based on the actual portion, is the honest comparison.

Bag weight divided by daily portion. A 12 kg bag at 250 g/day lasts 48 days. Note that opened kibble is best used within about 6 weeks — very large bags for small dogs can go stale or rancid before they're finished, which is itself a hidden cost.
